The 30km long Elephant fence in Gomarankadawala was inaugurated by President Maithripala Sirisena on Thursday (20)

An amount of 21.2 million has been invested to complete the project, with aim to minimize damage caused to the crops by elephants and to end the age old conflict between elephants and the poor farmers. Strong concrete beams have been used to erect the elephant fence instead of using tree trunks, manufactured by the Army Forces.

Chief Sanghanayake of North and East Ven Polhengoda Uparatana along with Electoral organizer Mrs Ariyawathi Galappatthi Thaunell, President of Special Projects Director Priyantha Pathirana, Project Director Brigadier Ramanayake Neranjan, Construction Director Major Camika Jagoda together with other officials and public representatives were also present.
