The first international flight to Chennai from Jaffna International Airport commenced its journey today (11). Governor of Northern Province Dr. Suren Raghavan also flew on Alliance Air’s AL 9 102 passenger flight from Jaffna International Airport to Chennai, India.
Alliance Air, the subsidiary of Air India, today launched its maiden overseas flight with the commencement of the 90-minutes thrice-a-week flight operations from Chennai Airport to Jaffna.
The flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of every week.
India had flight service to Jaffna until the late 1970s before the beginning of civil war in the island after which it was used for military operations.
While domestic service from the airport was resumed in 2002, on October 17, 2019 it was renamed as Jaffna International Airport and welcomed the first international aircraft from Chennai.
