Police are yet to determine the exact cause of the death of a Sri Lankan captain killed on board the Ocean Trite while sailing to Sharjah port.

UAE based Ocean Trite was traveling from Iran back to the UAE when it was reportedly attacked by pirates.

Sri Lankan Consul General in Dubai told Emirates 24|7 that although initial reports claimed that the captain must have been killed by pirates, the exact cause is yet to be determined.

“He was killed in UAE waters. We are still not sure if he was killed by pirates. Police are still investigating the case. Eleven others who were in the ship are being questioned by the police. Some details will emerge by this evening,” said the Sri Lankan Consul General Wasantha Senanayake.

Sunil Dharmaratne was captaining the vessel Ocean Trite along with eight other Sri Lankans and two Pakistani nationals. According to reports the captain was killed after he was shot at.

“The body will be transported to Sri Lanka after an autopsy is conducted,” said Senanayake.

Sri Lankan Authorities in Sharjah along with the UAE authorities will conduct the autopsy.

According to another source the captain was first stabbed and then shot dead. Dharmaratne was a retired Naval officer. – (Emirates 24/7)
