The 21 university students who were arrested yesterday under the charge of forcibly entering the Ministry of Higher Education and damaging state property were ordered to be kept in remand custody till 29th October by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

The students were produced before the Magistrate’s Court today by the Cinnamon Gardens police.  Submitting a report to courts the police stated that the student had forcibly trespassed in to the premises and caused damage to the property.

The damaged property includes an official vehicle of the Higher Education Minister and several other vehicles while the total cost of the damage amounts to over Rs. 200 000, the police stated in their report.

The lawyer representing the students had requested the court to release the 21 suspects on bail saying they had no connection with the said attacks. However the Colombo Chief Magistrate, Rashmi Singappuli denied the request and ordered that the suspects be held in remand custody till 29 October.
