SLMC to oppose LG polls amendments if proposals not included

If the proposals forwarded to the government by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) regarding the amendment of the Local Government polls system are not included, the party will oppose the move, said SLMC Deputy General Secretary Nizam Kariapper.
The SLMC held several rounds of talks with the government regarding the proposed amendments and also submitted its proposals for inclusion. If these proposals are not included, the SLMC would canvass against the amendments, Mr. Kariapper added.
The SLMC is also to contest the upcoming LG polls separately under its ‘Tree’ symbol and not under any alliances, the party Deputy General Secretary added.
The government proposals to amend the Local Government (LG) election system are to be placed before the local councils next week in a bid to garner their support for same.
