Pope Benedict XVI has elevated Colombo Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith as a Cardinal a short while ago, says Archbishop’s Administrative Secretary Fr. Clintus Fernando.

An official intimation is expected to reach the Archbishop’s House in Colombo today, Fr. Fernando said.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Ranjith thus becomes the second Sri Lankan to hold office of a Cardinal, the first being Thomas Benjamin Cooray, OMI (December 28, 1901—October 29, 1988). He was the Archbishop of Colombo from 1947 to 1976, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1965.
