1999 blast suspect sentenced

The suspect Shakthiwel Illangeishwaran who pleaded guilty to the 1999 Town Hall bomb attack which killed 28 and injured former President Chandrika Kumaratunga was sentenced to 30 years rigorous imprisonment by the High Court today.


The defendant who was 19 at the time of the crime — has confessed to transporting the explosives from rebel-controlled territory into capital, Colombo.




Giving the sentence High Court judge W.M.P.D. Waraweva said that the said that it was proven that the accused had attempted to murder the former President. He added that if the former President had been assassinated the country would have plunged into turmoil.

 

The 1999 blast 28 persons were killed and another 80 were injured.
