The Sri Lankan government now has all the authorities it needs to lead the country towards a future that involves reintegration of the various communities and can move ahead in a way that is in the interest of all of the country’s people, US State Department Spokesman Philip J. Crowley stated on Friday.
Speaking in response to a question posed by a reporter, who inquired as to whether talks are taking place regarding the investigation of crimes committed by the Sri Lankan government against innocent people during the last stages of the war.
The Assistant Secretary stated, at the daily press briefing in Washington DC, that the US continues to encourage the Sri Lankan Government to have a full accounting of the way in which the conflict ended and that it is important to the country’s future.
“With that, the electoral results and the obvious capabilities of the Sri Lanka Government becomes a special responsibility,” he added.
