The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) says that there is a need for an alternative program in order to register the people in refugee camps as eligible voters.
The Elections Department has to immediately direct its attention towards implementing a proper program to enter the people above the age of 18 and residing in IDP camps in the North, including the Manik farm IDP centre, into the 2010 voters’ list revising process, the organization states.
A statement issued by the CaFFE organization states that, the voter registration process in many parts of the North is in its final stages right now, however even the initial steps have not been taken to register the IDPs living in camps such as the Manik farm centre who have not been resettled yet into the 2010 voters list.
Over 17,000 people still inhabit IDP camps as refugees. The Elections Department has decided to postpone the registering of the refugees in the Manik farm IDP centre as voters until there resettlement process is completed, it says.
