The Supreme Court opinion on the proposed draft of the Local Government Elections (Amendment) Bill will be informed to the Parliament at the coming Parliament session, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Indika Bandaranayake said.

The Parliament is scheduled to reassemble on 09 November. The proposed draft bill has been forwarded to the Supreme Court in order to assess whether it is contrary to the constitution.

While the term period of the current Local Government will officially end on 31 March 2010, preparations are being made in order to hold a Local Government election before that date under the new election system, the Deputy Minister added.
