Elephant hunt in Vavuniya

A special operation was launched yesterday to drive away wild elephants in several parts of Vavuniya occupied by the recently relocated populace. The operation was initiated at the Omantha area with the help of Sri Lanka Army and the Wildlife Conservation Officers.
According to information revealed by Wildlife officers some 50 to 60 wild elephants roam the newly settled areas in Vavuniya. In addition to elephants they will also chase away bison and wild boars in the area.
It has been reported that the residents of the area will be trained to handle firecrackers designed to chase away elephants, after the animals are successfully chased away to the Nedunkeni jungle by the officers.
