The statements made by the Prisons Department, the police and the statements made by various other fractions regarding the clash that took place at the Welikada prison on Sunday (07 November) are entirely contradictory, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake states.

Several statement were made recently to the media regarding the matter, in which a senior officer of the police had stated that the police were not assisted by the Prisons Department when conducting the operation, he said at a press briefing today (09 November).

However the Minister in charge of the Prison system D.E.W. Gunasekara had accused the police of conducting these sudden operations without presenting prior notice to the prisons, Mr. Attanayake pointed out.

He also said that media had reported that information regarding the raid had been leaked to certain inmates at the prison.

Speaking of another side to this incident the Parliamentarian expressed that the important inmate inside the Welikada prison (Sarath Fonseka) could have been affected by this occurrence.

“If anyone had premeditated such a conflict in order to bring harm to the life of Sarath Fonseka, will the government take the blame for it?” he questioned.
