Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena said at the Parliament today that in the near future the government will launch an island wide registration of non-governmental organizations (NGO) operating in Sri Lanka.

He made this statement in response to a question posed by government MP Rajiva Wijesinha.  Mr. Gunawardena claimed that the actions of some of these NGOs have tarnished the image of Sri Lanka internationally.

He added that their have been certain issues with regard to the granting of visa extensions to some NGO employees. This too will be looked in to by the government, he said.
