The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health says that there is a possibility for epidemic diseases to spread in the country due to the recent floods in various parts of the island. The contamination of water sources have been cited as the main cause of this.

There is a high risk of the spreading of dysentery diseases, skin diseases and respiratory diseases due to the use of contaminated water, Senior Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry, Dr. Sudath Peiris stated.

He also warned the public to at least boil the drinking water in high temperatures before use and also to subject the water sources to proper water chlorification.

The Epidemiologist also pointed out that their could be an increase in the spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus. Therefore if anybody is showing respiratory disease symptoms for more that 3 days they should be rushed to a doctor immediately, Dr. Peiris urged the public.
