For the first time, Sri Lanka will send its troops to Lebanon to serve in the UN peacekeeping force deployed there, military officials said today.

A total of 150 soldiers will go to Lebanon next week, a senior military official said.
Sri Lanka has deployed its troops as part of the UN peacekeeping force in several countries including Haiti and Chad. They had been previously deployed for observation duties in Congo, Sudan and Western Sahara, but it is the first time that they would be serving in Lebanon as part of the UN peacekeeping force.

More than 1,000 Sri Lankan soldiers are currently serving in UN peacekeeping forces, according to army headquarters.

Sri Lanka’’s first-ever participation in a UN peacekeeping force came way back in 1960 when some six peacekeepers were deployed in the United Nations Mission in Congo, PTI reports.
