Parliamentarian Mohamed Abdul Cader, who recently crossed over to the government and obtained a Ministerial post, and two other suspects have been released from charges of alleged misappropriation of Samurdi Funds by the Colombo High Court today.
When the case was called forth today the government attorney stated that the original documents regarding the case have been misplaced and therefore it is difficult to continue with the case.
He also expressed the inability to summon a key witness in the court case, former Samurdi Commissioner General Dr. Kumari Navaratna, due to her being out of the country.
Hence the government attorney requested the court to dismiss the indictment charges.
Colombo High Court Judge Kumudini Wickramasinghe who then permitted the dismissal of the indictment charges, ordered that the three suspects including Minister Abdul Cader be released.
They had been charged with wrongfully handling 690 bags of rice belonging to the Samurdhi Social Development Trust Fund, thereby making the government suffer losses of one million rupees.
