VIDEO: Electricity tariff hike starting from 2011

The electricity tariff will be increased with affect from January 01, 2011 as proposed by the 2011 budget, the Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawaka said at a press briefing today.
He also stated that a special meeting will be held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo tomorrow (December 15) in order to canvass the opinion of the public regarding the new electricity tariff system.
The Minister requested the participation of those who are concerned with regard to the matter tomorrow.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his budget speech on November 22 proposed an 8% tariff hike on General Electricity use over 90 units starting from January 2011.
However the President had stated that specified places of religious worship, hospitals and schools will be exempt from the rate hike.
