The Labour and Labour Relations Ministry states that a proposal has been received suggesting that private sector workers be given two days off per week. The Secretary of the Ministry Upali Wijeweera stated that they plan on discussing the proposal at the National Labour Advisory Council on December 21.
It has been proposed that the private sector employee’s weekly working hours, which is 45 hours will be spread into five working days as 9 hours of work per day, the Secretary to the Labour and Labour Relations Ministry said.
The idea is not only to regard the weekends (Saturday and Sunday) as holidays but to work it out in such a way that any two days of the week can be regarded as off days, he further expressed.
