Even if the UN panel of experts appointed to probe alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka does visit the country the Tamil public will not gain any benefit from it, says M.K. Sivajilingam. Both the President appointed LLRC and the UN Secretary-General appointed Expert Panel are pointless, he told Ada Derana.
The General Secretary of the Tamil National Freedom Alliance made these comments when questioned in regard to UN Expert Panel’s plans to visit Sri Lanka and meet with the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).
Tamils living in Sri Lanka as well as the Tamils in foreign countries on a number of occasions, during the time of the war and after it ended, attempted to alert the United Nations on the hardships faced by the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, however those efforts were futile, he stated.
Even though Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who toured the Vanni District following the end of the war, was well aware of the problems and distresses faced by Tamil people and even though he made promises to take certain measures in order to resolve those issues, so far no such measures have been taken, the former Parliamentarian accused.
He further emphasized that although in the past such expert panels have carried out probes on various occasions, none of those panels did any good to the public.
Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon had previously stated that the Expert Panel appointed by him will be visiting Sri Lanka to meet with the LLRC following a discussion held between himself and President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
