Jewelry heist goes wrong, robber dies in shooting

Three armed burglars had attempted to rob a jewelry store in the Maharagama area today (December 26) morning. When the Maharagama police had arrived at the scene following a tip-off the robbers had fired upon the police in an effort to escape.
One of the robbers had died from police fire while another had been apprehended following the shootout. However the third suspect had fled the area and police are still in search of him, Police Media Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody revealed.
According to the police an automatic weapon, an illegal homemade hand gun and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the arrested burglar.
The Maharagama police division and the Nugegoda police division have launched an operation to track down the escaped suspect, the Spokesman said.
