Fish prices up but still better than last year - Rajitha

Fish prices have dropped by 20 percent in comparison to corresponding period last year despite slight increases in domestic prices in the past few weeks, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

Speaking to the media at a press conference in Colombo, Minister Senaratne said that domestic fish prices had increased during the last few weeks because of the low production as Christian fishermen were not going to sea during the holiday season.

He stated that the Fisheries Corporation had managed to maintain its profits while providing its employees with bonuses and overtime payments and queried as to why the private companies cannot reduce its prices if the government was able to do all this.
