The Health Ministry states that the proposed system to charge patients who are being treated for illnesses related to alcohol consumption and smoking will commence from this month.

If the doctor who is treating the patient concludes that the cause of the illness or disease is either alcohol or cigarettes then the patient would have to pay for his medications, the Ministry points out.

It has been identified that 90% of noncontiguous diseases are caused due to drinking liquor, smoking or drugs abuse.

According to the Ministry of Health some 350 persons die every day owing to noncontiguous diseases and it’s a grave concern that almost 80% of these persons are between the ages of 40 and 55.
