The Additional Director of Customs, P. A. Dias states that an extensive investigation is ongoing regarding the incident where foreign currency worth almost 1 billion Sri Lankan rupees was fraudulently sent from Sri Lanka to a foreign country.
The investigation is being carried out mainly focusing on an official of a private bank and a certain businessman who had been involved in the incident.
We are planning to uncover whether the money was sent abroad by presenting false documentation in order to import fabrics, Mr. Dias explained.
He added that reasonable suspicion exists that there is a certain deceitful motive behind sending such a large amount of money out of the country.
He further expressed that information is being unearthed that the fraud had been carried out by indicating the import and export trades of two fake companies.
If the persons related to the incident are found guilty this would be the biggest foreign exchange fraud in the country to date.
