The Student’s Union of the Sabaragamuwa University has demanded the administrative board that the university be re-opened immediately. The administration had taken measures to close down the university yesterday on unjust grounds, Union President Danushka Disanayake said.
The university had been temporarily closed yesterday (January 01) due to certain ragging incidents. The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Sabaragamuwa had stated that students within the University premises had been ordered to evacuate the area by today morning.
Professor H.M.S. Priyanath says that several complaints had been received regarding female first year students being ragged by senior students while some had even fallen ill as a result of the ragging.
However due to the intense pressure by the senior students many of the students don’t speak of the incidents, he added.
President of the Sabaragamuwa University Student’s Union disclosed that a protest was held today (January 02) morning in front of the university against the sudden shutting down of the institution.
