The rapidity of the spread of the influenza AH1N1 virus often referred to as ‘swine flu’, within the country has somewhat decreased now, the Ministry of Health stated while adding that presently the number of patients infected by the virus is reported to be 400.

23 persons have passed away as a result of the AH1N1 virus, the Ministry said. However the number of swine flu related cases reported within December 20 and 26 shows a notable reduction compared to previous weeks, the Health Ministry stated.

Within that time period 47 people were reported to have contracted the virus while one patient had died compared to the prior week in which 76 cases were reported in addition to nine AH1N1 virus related deaths, the Ministry pointed out.

More than 1.5 million people have been given vaccination to help protect them from being infected with the dangerous disease, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Palitha Mahipala affirmed.
