Sri Lanka is set to conduct a comprehensive census covering the entire country for the first time in thirty years following the end of the war, officials said.
Due to the civil war that lasted over three decades, conducting of a national census covering the entire country was not possible, officials of the census and statistics department said.
“Sri Lanka conducted census in 1991 and 2001 but was not able to cover the entire island as the war was going on,” officials said, adding “So this year’s census would be the first national census since 1981”.
The Census will be conducted in the third quarter of 2011, according to the department.
The last census was only able to cover 18 districts out of a total of 22 administrative districts in the country.
This year’s census will be conducted in three parts of demarcating the district and divisional boundaries followed by buildings survey.
The Census will be conducted in the third quarter of the 2011, according to census and statistics department, PTI reports.
