‘Glorious Jaffna’ - a new book that features the work of photographer Tharindu Amunugama and writer Sunela Samaranayake is a personal photo essay shot in the northern city of Jaffna and is inspired by the enormous sense of hope for Jaffna to one day return to where it once was in the books of history – Glorious!

Published as a corporate social initiative by Asia Capital PLC, where both Tharindu and Sunela are employed in the departments of Portfolios Management and Transactions Advisory respectively, this latest photo book is designed to highlight some of the wonderful stories about the people, the customs, the traditions and the landscapes of Jaffna. “Ever since we can remember, Jaffna has been a place we could not visit due to the civil war which devastated the peninsula and other parts of the island for twenty-six years,” explains Sunela. “As children we were told wonderful stories about Jaffna and till very recently, they all seemed like fairy tales and bed-time stories of an amazing place. Therefore it is with pride that Tharindu and I have spent hours putting this book together – with the hope that we can make those fairy tales come true in the eyes of our readers.”

Glorious Jaffna Photographer Tharindu Amunugama explained: “The book is a showcase for the power of visual storytelling. It is a celebration of photography and the championing of photojournalism. This is a tribute to a resilient people who has not lost hope”.

The themes addressed in ‘Glorious Jaffna’ range from personality portraits to landscapes, devotees, places of religious worship, spices and its colorful culture, time-honored traditions and a great sense of hope. “These are just a few areas we have touched on in our book,” avers Tharindu.

The publication of ‘Glorious Jaffna’ was supported by the Chairman together with the entire Investments team and Wishwa at Asia Capital PLC, Emagewise (Publishing), Mrs. Jean Arasanayagam (Poetry), and from Jaffna - the Johnson’s family .

All proceeds from the sale of the book will be in aid of assisting two children’s charities operating in Jaffna. One is a milk nutritional programme to feed children between the ages of six and twelve through the Humpty Dumpty Institute - Sri Lanka. The other focuses on an educational sponsorship programme for children affected by the prolonged civil war through HUDEC-CARITAS of Jaffna. It is now available for purchase from all leading bookstores located island-wide.
