Discussions fail, bus strike to go islandwide

The LPBOA states that they will carryout with the bus strike as a result of the unsuccessful discussions with Minister Kumara Welgama yesterday. The strike which was initially planned to take place only in the Western Province will now take effect islandwide, Gemunu Wijeratne said.
The final decision regarding the matter will be taken tomorrow (January 09), the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne affirmed.
When Ada Derana queried Minister of Transport, Kumara Welgama in regard to the situation he expressed that the bus unions refused to a 3% bus fare hike which had been proposed instead of an increase in the minimum bus fare.
However, any form of strike will be faced effectively, the Minister declared.
