The decision made by the government to hold only the Pradeshiya Sabha elections first and to temporarily postpone the Municipal Council and Urban Council elections was not due to the Cricket World Cup, says the United National Party.
Even though the government repetitively states that the elections are being delayed because of the World Cup, the decision had actually been made to cover-up the possible defeat they may suffer from the election and also to conceal the government’s bankruptcy, Gayantha Karunathilake pointed out.
Speaking at a press conference today (January 10) the UNP Spokesperson conveyed that the government has decided not to afford nominations to several ruling party members who voted against the budget in certain Local Government institutions where the budget was defeated.
Through such actions it is evident that there is no democracy even within the United People’s Freedom Alliance let alone in the country the Galle District MP, Gayantha Karunathilake expressed.
