The Canadian Tamil Congress says that they welcome the initial contribution made by the Canadian government towards the flood victims of Sri Lanka. Given the gravity of the situation and the prolonged loss of livelihood for hundreds of thousands of people, we call upon the Canadian government to increase support for the relief efforts, its Spokesperson Sarujan Kanapathipillai stated.

“The Canadian government has vital resources that can be useful in times of disaster, notably, the DART Team (Disaster Assistance Response Team), which played a critical role in the aftermath of the tsunami. We urge the Canadian government to deploy the DART team to Eastern Sri Lanka” he added.

Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Bruce Levy, had recently pledged an initial $20,000 relief through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives.

In a statement released yesterday the CTC expressed that the responsibilities in times such as these does not rests with governments alone, it is up to all of us to come forward.

Canadian generosity at times of need have been overwhelming. We appeal to all Canadians to support, credible, established organizations with the relief effort, the release further reads.

The Canadian Tamil Congress directs contributors to donate funds to organizations such as the Medical Institute for Tamils (MIFT), International Medical Health Organization (IMHO), and the Canadian Red Cross.
