The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today decided to release UNP Western Provincial Councillor Nimal R. Peiris on bail. He had been arrested yesterday (January 27) according to a complaint made to the Welikada Police for allegedly threatening the Colombo District Secretary.
Submitting a report to the court the police stated that the Provincial Councillor had threatened and obstructed the duties of the District Secretary during the handing over of nominations for the Maharagama Municipal Council.
The attorneys representing Nimal R. Peiris then revealed that yesterday the District Secretary had rejected the PC member’s objections that the nominations papers filed by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) should be rejected.
When the Provincial Councillor had then requested that a report is presented in regard that too had been rejected by the District Secretary resulting in the dispute, the attorneys informed court.
However, after considering all presented details the Additional Magistrate Prasanna de Alwis ordered that the Western Provincial Council member be released on a personal bail of Rs. 200,000.
