The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Inspector General of Police to appear before court and give evidence in regard to contempt of court charges. The notice was issued by the Supreme Court after considering a petition filed by J. R. Jayawardena, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ampara who is currently suspended.
SSP Jayawardena stated at court that the IGP had pledged to the Supreme Court on December 01, 2010 that he would reinstate the SSP who was then suspended.
However he had contravened the pledge he had made by suspending me once again on December 24, 2010, the Senior Superintendent of Police further added.
Through this the Inspector General of Police has broken the promise he had made to the Supreme Court and thus can be trialed for contempt of court, the petitioner pointed out.
Therefore the notice was issued to the IGP by a three member Supreme Court judge panel headed by Chief Justice Asoka de Silva ordering him to appear in court on February 11.
