Three more mahouts suspended over elephant’s death

Another three mahouts have been suspended following the investigation on the death of Neelagiri, a 23-year-old male elephant at the Pinnawela elephant orphanage. This brings the total number of suspensions of the orphanage’s employees to 10.
Director of the Zoological Department, Baashwara Gunaratne says that the postmortem report conducted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the Peradeniya University states that the elephant’s body contained 96 wounds inflicted by sharp implements (Ankus).
Investigations on Neelagiri’s death initiated by the Zoological Department are presently ongoing.
