UPDATE: Nature’s fury up to evening today

The current North-East monsoonal downpour has inundated several areas in the island, affecting 1,182,601 people from 318,417 families by afternoon today (Feb. 8), according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The Centre also reports that 17,470 dwellings have been either partially or fully damaged. While two persons are reported missing, 14 have been injured and two deaths reported so far. The displaced are being temporarily housed in 686 welfare centres and all facilities are being provided, adds the DMC.
Area wise, in Trincomalee, the Trincomalee-Pulmodai road is reported impassable from Kallarawa to Pulmodai while the Mahaweli River bund has been breached at Ariyanmankeri.
Matale: A landslide has been reported in the Puchi Rattota Grama Niladhari Division in Matale and the site is being continuously monitored.
Anuradhapura: Two sluice gate of the Kalawewa, 17 sluice gates of the Rajanganaya Tank, 06 sluice gates of the Nachchaduwa tank have been opened. Handungama and Awukana bridges have been inundated. Low lying areas of Galnewa, Ipalogama, Talawa, Tambuttegama, Kalaoya and Yanoya too have been inundated. Horowpathana town has been inundated, as well as the Malwatuoya Lane bridge.
Polonnaruwa: 11 sluice gates of Kawudulla and 07 sluice gates of Minneriya tank opened. The Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa road inundated and is impassable.
Badulla: Due to possibility of land slide in Mawalangala Aramaya, 30 Buddhist monks have been temporarily evacuated to safer places.
Vavuniya: A child has reportedly died due to drowning.
Nuwara Eliya: A land slide has occurred in Kalaganwatta and Highforest Grama Niladhari Divisions while three kilometers of the road from Tawalantenna to Ramboda have been temporarily closed along the Nuwara Eliya-Gampola road due to risks of landslides.
Puttalam: 17 sluice gates of Rajanganaya, 08 sluice gates of Tabbowa and 06 sluice gates of the Inginimitiya tanks have been opened. The Anamaduwa-Nawagattegama road is inundated and impassable.
Mannar: Paruppukandanthan-Madu A-14 road inundated due to flood waters.
Moneragala: Dunumewewa is at risk of being breached while 06 sluice gates of the Senanayake Samudraya have been opened.
