Many political parties have requested that the government postpone the local government elections in view of the heavy flooding in several parts of the country, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Indika Bandaranayake stated.

The election related activities have been hindered by the prevailing weather conditions in the country while the Elections Commissioner is said to meet with all the parties to discuss this matter in the future.

However, the government is yet to take a final decision on the postponement of the elections. The Deputy Minister said that the elections will be postponed if the situation persists.
