Election Commissioner given time to submit facts on nomination rejections

The Appeals Court today decided to grant more time for the Election Commissioner to study the nomination papers that were rejected by the department ahead of the local government elections.
Around 60 petitions put forward by leading political parties and independent groups were taken up at the Appeals Courts today after many nomination papers were rejected by the Elections Department. The Election Commissioner was given until the February 15 to study the applications and give facts regarding the rejections.
The UPFA submitted 36 petitions regarding these rejections, the UNP handed over seven while the SLMC handed over six. Various independent groups submitted 14 petitions concerning rejections as well while the matter will be taken up at courts again on February 15 and 18.
