Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has issued an order to inspect every soft drink manufacturing factory in the country. The sudden decision comes after the death of an 11-year-old child yesterday (February 17) in Polonnaruwa after consuming a soft drink.
The Minister has instructed officials to direct special attention towards the production, distribution and storage processes in soft drink manufacturing plants island-wide during the inspections.
The order for the inspections had been issued after taking into consideration the incident yesterday in which a child had died and her mother had been hospitalized over suspected food poisoning. They were suspected to have developed adverse reactions following the consumption of chocolate and a soft drink.
The Public Health Officers will be assembled today and instructed on the matter, the Ministry of Health stated.
