Election in 60 LG bodies postponed

Elections for 60 Local Government bodies, with pending legal issues will not be held on March 17,the Election Department said.


The decision had been made by the Elections Commissioner, Dayananda Disanayake due certain political parties taking legal action against the rejection of nominations in these Local Government institutions, the Deputy Elections Commissioner stated.


Deputy Elections Commissioner, W. P. Sumanasiri pointed out that the forthcoming Local Government election cannot be held for the 60 LG institutions in question, until the legal trials concerning those have ended.  


Therefore elections will not be held for those Local Government bodies come March 17 while the election date for those LG bodies will be announced after the court cases have ended and a verdict is given, Mr. Sumanasiri further expressed.
