Sri Lanka choose to bat in newly opened stadium

The Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket stadium in Sooriyawewa was declared open by the Speaker, Chamal Rajapaksa a short while ago. The inaugural match of the stadium will also be Sri Lanka’s first match in the 2011 ICC World Cup and will commence shortly. Sri Lanka takes on minnows Canada in the Group A match.


Meanwhile Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat against Canada in their first match at Sooriyawewa.

Sri Lanka: Kumar Sangakkara (C), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis.

Canada: Ashish Bagai (C), Rizwan Cheema, Harvir Baidwan, Tyson Gordon, Henry Osinde, John Davison, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Khurram Chohan, Jimmy Hansra, Zubin Surkari and Balaji Rao.

Umpires: Shavir Tarapore (India) and Ian Gould (Eng)
Third Umpire: Tony Hill
Match Referee: Chris Broad.
