The Elections Department has decided to hold the Local Government election for the Maharagama Urban Council on March 17 after the United National Party withdrew its writ application from the Court of Appeal today.
The petition had been filed by the UNP requesting that the nomination papers presented by the UPFA for the Maharagama Urban Council be rejected.
When the petition was taken up at court today the attorney representing UNP General Secretary Tssa Attanayake informed that if the Election Commissioner pledges to hold the LG election for the Maharagama Urban Council without any postponement, the UNP is willing to withdraw the petition.
The government attorney representing the Elections Commissioner then expressed that the Commissioner is prepared to hold the election without any delay.
The petitioning party’s attorney, who then accepted the agreement subsequently withdrew the writ application.
