Norway arrests Lankan asylum seeker for triple-murder

February 22, 2011   05:01 pm

OSLO ó Norwegian law enforcement officials say they have arrested a Sri Lankan asylum seeker after the man admitted to killing three people in his home country on behalf of Tamil Tiger rebels.

The manís lawyer says his client admitted to the murders in an interview during the asylum process and that he committed the crimes after Tamil Tiger rebels had threatened to harm his family if he didnít comply.

Prosecutor Per Zimmer defended the arrest Monday, saying it was important Norway did not become a haven for people who committed serious crimes abroad.

Zimmer says the alleged murders occurred in 2004 and 2006. He says police are studying whether the murders should be treated as war crimes, The Associated Press (AP) reported.
