The government says that the LLRC will give proper answers to the doubts of the international community. But what they (the international community) is clearly stating is that the LLRC is merely an eyewash, said UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella.
“Can we continue by continuously conflicting with the international community? How far can we go like this?” he questioned during a press conference today (March 04).
The Parliamentarian stated that during a discussion he had said to Prof G.L. Peiris that there is only one way the government can free them selves no matter what accusations faced regarding human rights.
“That is to provide a good political solution. The United National Party is ready to support to bring forth a good political solution” he said adding that if a good political solution is given all the accusations will go away.
The Kandy District MP says that he has said this to the government repeatedly but the government has not brought forth a political solution and is unable to act without attracting the suspicion of the international community.
“At least say something believable. What do they go and say? They (the government) tell them that there were no civilian casualties during the war and that no human rights violations occurred” he expressed “will they believe this?”
This is the manner in which our foreign policy is handled. When handling a foreign policy we have admit when we do something wrong, Kiriella pointed out. He says that the government has to admit wrongdoing and then point out to them the reasons for it.
We all know that some 300, 000 civilians escaped LTTE captivity and came; said the MP “they have to open their mouths and tell these”.
When we tell blatant lies they (the international community) will obviously think we have something to hide, he further expressed.
He says that the government has to begin an acceptable dialog with the United Nations and with the international Community without telling them these ‘fairytale stories’.
“The present situation of the government is such that government Ministers cannot travel to western countries. Today Ministers don’t have visas for western countries.”
Lakshman Kiriella further points out that 75% of the country’s export are sent to western countries and it is with them that we have to deal with on a trade level.
When the report from the United Nations is submitted the situation will worsen, he stressed.
