Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister, Rajitha Senarathne says that necessary steps have been taken in order to prevent Sri Lankan fishermen being arrested by Indian authorities.
He said that the country’s fishermen will be informed of decisions that need be taken to avoid being apprehended in India. However, the number of arrests of Lankan fishermen by Indian Coast Guards has considerably decreased already, the Minister pointed out.
He stated that out of the 100 fishermen and the 21 fishing vessels arrested by the Indian Coast Guard, 94 fishermen and 20 vessels have so far been released.
While 81 of those fishermen and 15 boats have already reached Sri Lanka the remainder would arrive in the country in the coming week, Rajitha Senarathne added.
