Extending school hours is inappropriate and is contrary to educational psychology, says the Ceylon Teachers’ Union. The school hours within the country’s school system has been decided through discussions by groups comprising of educationists and educational psychologists, Chairman of CTU Joseph Stalin said.
He accused that the Education Minister has opted to change this process on his own accord and without consulting with anybody. If the Minister intends to extend the school hours in this manner according to his personal opinion, we strongly oppose it, Joseph Stalin expressed.
However, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana states that the educational standards of these schools will be improved through the development of the school’s resources.
Hence from January next year the school hours in 1000 selected schools will be 7.30am to 3.00pm. the Minister pointed out that this will be an initial step for the betterment of education in schools.
