The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has nominated Jayantha Ketagoda to fill the parliamentary seat made vacant due to the imprisonment of former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka.
The unanimous decision had been made during a party meeting today (March 05), said DNA national list MP Tiran Alles.
Previously DNA member Lakshman Nipunarachchi’s name had been gazetted as the replacement for the parliament seat made vacant after DNA leader Sarath Fonseka was imprisoned.
However, Nipunarachchi had refused to fill the seat of Sarath Fonseka and therefore the name of Jayantha Ketagoda, who received the next highest number of preferential votes, was gazetted.
Even though Jayantha Ketagoda too has decided not to accept the appointment, the Democratic National Alliance has unanimously decided that he has to accept the Parliamentary seat, Tiran Alles stated.
He also said that Ketagoda is scheduled to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on March 08 before the Speaker.
Nevertheless, the DNA still believes that the seat rightfully belongs to the former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, he emphasized.
