The Cabinet decided to establish an organization called the Colombo Metropolitan City Corporation by combining the five local bodies in the Colombo city region.
This includes the Colombo Municipal Council, Dehiwela- Mt Lavinia Municipal Council, Sri-Jayawardenapura- Kotte Municipal Council, Kolonnawa Urban Council and the Kotikawatta- Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha.
The government information department reported that even though the new corporation will aim at streamlining the local administration and building their capacity, the existing local bodies will continue to function.
The corporation will be headed by a city Governor appointed by the President while the heads and deputy heads of the local bodies along with a nominated member from the opposition of each local authority will constitute the composition of the corporation.
Meanwhile, twelve advisory committees will also be set up to advise the corporation.
