Time change for Parliament on Fridays

April 7, 2011   05:48 pm

A motion to change the beginning of Parliamentary sessions from the current 1.00 pm to 1.30 pm only on Fridays was passed in the House this evening (April 7), sources told Adaderana a short while ago. Accordingly, tomorrow being Friday, Parliament will meet from 1.30 pm.

On other days the House will begin sessions at 1.00 pm and end at 7.00 pm, unless otherwise decided. On Fridays it will meet from 1.30 pm to 7.30 pm. One reason for the change has been to accommodate Muslim Parliamentarians and officials to attend the customary Friday prayers, the sources added.

The motion had been presented to the House by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva on a proposal by United People’s Freedom Alliance member A.H.M. Azwer to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa. It had then been discussed at a Party Leaders’ meeting and presented to the House.
