SLBFE clarifies situation of Lankans in Jordan

37 Sri Lankan domestic workers had arrived at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan seeking protection due to their visas not being extended by their employers, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment confirmed.
While discussions were ongoing between the embassy officials and Jordanian authorities in regard to the issue the female workers had escaped from the embassy, the bureau revealed.
They were later handed over back to the embassy by the Jordanian Police after being informed by of the matter by the Lankan embassy.
Afterwards 33 of these female domestic workers had notified the embassy in writing that they would resolve their issues with the assistance of a NGO, and thereby had vacated the embassy premises.
However, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan as advised by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment is proceeding to take the necessary actions in regard to all of the domestic workers.
