Motorola/SLASSCOM sponsored Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition 2011 was launched recently at Prof. V.K Samaranayake Auditorium of University of Colombo amidst a full house participation from many state and private sector Universities.

While welcoming academic staff and Undergraduates from all Universities, Mr. Anuradha Tennakoon , Director of Motorola’s R&D centre and Country Manager for Sri Lanka said,“ The first completion in 2010 was a great success. We want to make this year’s competition even better”. He went on to explain why Enterprise Mobility is important in today’s business world and the competition is purely a CSR initiative from Motorola and SLASSCOM to move Sri Lanka to the forefront of this most dynamic technology today.

“Motorola being the world leader in Enterprise Mobility and having a wealth of skills and experience at Sri Lanka R&D centre, we think it is their duty to impart the knowledge to future generation of IT professionals in Sri Lanka” said Mr. Tennakoon.

Mr. Nayana Serasinghe, Head SLASSCOM CoE for Mobile & Telecom and CEO of DnotaIT said that by making this an annual event SLASSCOM wishes to expand Sri Lanka’s capacity in this technology so that it too will help SLASSCOM reaching its export revenue target of US $ 1b by year 2015.

By addressing the gathering Prof. Gihan Wickramanayake, Director,  University of Colombo School of Computing  said that he is pleased to see Motorola and SLASSCOM continuing this competition and selecting University of Colombo to launch this year’s event too. Remembering the vision of late Prof. V.K Samaranayake who is considered as the father of Sri Lankan IT,  Prof. Wickramanayake said that this is an excellent opportunities for the Undergraduates to show their innovative and creative talent.

The participants were from all state and private sector Universities who offered a Bachelor’s Degree in IT or Degrees with substantial IT modules including Universities of Colombo, Moratuwa, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Uva-Wellassa, Rajarata, Jaffna, Open University Sri Lanka, APIIT, IIT, SLIIT and NIBM.

“This event would be a great opportunity for us to understand the subject at industry level. Therefore, we are expecting to get the maximum use out of this and we will be submitting our abstract with an innovative idea since we are working on our final year project report on mobile applications. But there may be insufficient resources for us to come up with a successful, complete application. However, we would like to thank Motorola, SLASSCOM as well as to our IT division for delivering us this valuable knowledge” said undergraduates S. Ranjith and K. Nitharasan from University of Jaffna.

“This competition will help students to come up with innovative out of the box ideas using up to date technologies. Also it will help students to interact with leading industries outside their usual academic environment. We are certain that this competition will help students to improve their technical, presentation and entrepreneurial skills” said the academic staff from University of Uva-Wellassa who travelled all the way from Badulla to attend the launch.

Motorola/SLASSCOM expect to hold the final competition during latter part of September this year.
