Rumours regarding disasters causing panic amongst the public - DMC

Many false reports regarding various disasters had surfaced in the past few days while a similar report had given rise to a tense situation in the Southern Province yesterday, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) revealed.
Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodipillai stated that these false reports can be very harmful to public safety as it causes widespread confusion and panic.
He also added that the DMC was implementing a competent 24-hour programme to inform the public of any disaster situation and warned the public not to take rumours seriously.
Minister of Disaster Management, Mahinda Amaraweera said that strong legal action will be taken against those who spread these harmful rumours while a particular group that has been causing panic amongst the public has already been identified.
